Can you tell me if I need this tool, or something I can use in place of it. I should have looked ahead so I could ask them both together. I've asked around for this tool but no one has it. I was thinking about attaching my engine hoist where the oil pan bolted in and seeing if that would pull it out. The first three were removed fairly easily with the breaker bar. Thanks

The last cap of the four isn't coming out and both my service manual and the Autozone website say I need this tool in order to remove this. Here is the link to what Autozone says Rear Main bearing cap bolt remover

What you trying to remove the bearings from? No bearing should require a breaker bar to remove.

Oh, OK I saw your other post. Those cap bolts must really be in there. Woder if someone used loctite on the bolts. What are they-- 1/2" bolts?
Use a 6 point socket so you don't round off the heads.

All the ones Ihave got out were tight but you can use the bolts that hold it in as two handles to wiggle it out

Exactly like tinker said, then a pair of vise grips grabbing the lip, careful here, a gentle tug upwards will pull it off, they do not require the tool but they are on there quite tight. You do not want to wiggle this thing back and forth 30º or so but a gentle back and forth of about 10º should work fine.

I've pulled on this as hard as I can and it aint' going no where. The sides of this cap have what looks like metal dowls and a rubber seal around it. This is really fustrating. I was hoping I would have the crankshaft out today so I could bring the block to the machinist.

Those are not metal dowels but a rope coated in a chemical.

I got it off but I don't know if it was the best way to do it. I used my puller and set it up to push on the block with a piece of plastic between the pushing part and block. Didn't go through plastic so I don't think the block suffered. I didn't have to turn the wrench with much force and I only did a little on each side till I was able to pull it off by hand. The dowels are metal and look like needles with the sharp end pointing into the block. The metal is wrapped in rubber. THere was a felt or some kind of fabric under the cap. Well the crankshaft is out and I'm ready to get the block worked on. Gotta go read up on why I need to have done. A whole day of work and all I did was pull out 8 bolts. Wow! Thanks for all the help today.

Those needles are actually nails. I guess the previous owner couldn't find the right thing and used nails instead. This is probably what made it so difficult to pull out that cap.
