Ok, Here's my question. While working on a friends 1965 CJ5 w/v6 I discovered I didn't have an original radiator to replace his cobbled in Bubba radiator. After posting here and other places on the web for a correct used radiator I finally decided to by a reproduction one. Mainly because no one responed, they are apparently hard to find. I purchased a new radiator that says it fits 1965-1971 cj5 with v6. The problem is it doesn't fit! It is the same as my 1971 Jeepster and my 1970 cj5 but is to wide for the 1965 grill. Is there a different radiator or am I missing some brackets to mount this radiator to the earlier grill? Any pictures, part numbers, or help will be appriciated. I am not interested in radiators from other vehicles or aluminum. Focus on original.

The early V6 CJ's used a 17" wide radiator the later V6 CJ's and commando's used a 22" wide radiator as you found out . Bill

The radiator probably changed some when the cowl changed. I know that my 1971 cowl was different than Patricks when we met at Tellico this last year and i'm sure that his mounts on his radiator were also different because of this. Where did you get the repro radiator? Did you get it thru Turner 4wd.
Is this where the radiator came from?

Yup, they changed the radiator width at some point (I'm thinking '70 0r so, but could be wrong). My '67 had the same radiator as the F head, with the exception of the lower hose bib...

Was the V6 an option in '65? I thought they started in '66?

Not from Jeep factory, but from some dealers off the lot as early as '64.

i knew they looked completely different, but maybe this would explain why i just couldn't get the alignment that herm shows in his power steering conversion on my 71?

My 69 has the 22 inch radiator. As I am getting ready to install Herms PS conversion, I'm interested to know what problems you had.
I don't have a cowl if that is the issue.

My 68' had the narrow grille with the V-6.... luckily the radiator was still there and I could get it re-cored... I called all over the place trying to find replacement..... only place I found that had one was Radiators.com....to the tune of $500.00 shipped , but they were correct on the sizing and everything... Keep searching or do the 289 Mustang radiator thing that a lot of people talk about...

I had the same problem on my 70 cj....I checked on the board here and got the dimensions for a V6 radiator. it was the 17" one. I ordered one from kaiser willys. Turns out the cowl was way too wide. I just fabricated some mounts and away we go!.... I'll post pics when I get back from Vegas....WooHoo vacation is awesome! Dave

I ran into the same thing. I was told due to the varying applications in the Jeep world they just couldn't stock all of them so they just dropped the whole line. I took my radiator from the 4cyl and recored to a 3row and had them move the bottom hose connection to the other side. It cost $350.00 a little high but I know it will fit, no modifications.

    gregg,

it as a while back, but from what i remember i couldn't get the box to sit flush on the frame rail, beside the radiator, and have enough clearance fro th pump and exhaust at the same time. in order to get on thing you had to trade off one or two of the others. it looked like in order to get the box to sit where i wanted it, and looked like where it needed to be, that the radiator had to be notched a little bit. someone on the board confirmed it as well, he went ahead with the swap whee i called it quits and put it in front of the grill.
