Left side cutout? Ain't spoda be no left side cutout. Never seen or heard of a CJ5 with a snorkel, think that was an M38A1 thing.

I think (I know, I know) the left side was to allow a power cord to pass through. PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong...

well the left has a notch that was pressed into the hood. looks like barley enuff to fit a cord threw with out being pinched. and the right side has a removeable peice, that looks like it could be rivited into place. you could probbly see in my pictures. thanks josh

ECJ's shared a body config that included some military applications. The piece you're asking about on the right side was for a snorkel, IIRC; the little notch on the other side of the hood has been described as a pass-through for a power cable of some sort, though I always thought it was for my greasy fingers to get a grip on the hood when I wanted to see what was in there. Aren't you gonna ask about the rectangular cover on the cowel?

The left side notch is for the blackout driving light wires on the M38A1.

Here's a detailed diagram of the M38 pic posted earlier. Anyone know if a normal CJ oil bath intake has a second port for the snorkel tube?

hey stu, good thing they made that an duel notch, or else id be missing a digit. yeah i give up, whats the retangle put there for? you only get extra points if you have one, not remember falling off one. funny thats how i got into wrenching, good ole tote gotes. the one i have is cherry, wish my jeep matched it. but i dont think blue is camoflauge enuff. could this hobby get any better? aside from being able to go vertical without drown-out.man i cant wait to see my Tinkertoy on the trail...:)

I'm pretty sure the cutout in the hood was for the military snorkel kit on the M38A1. the M38A1 was available to the military before the CJ-5 came out so I guess willys didn't want to retool and just left the cutout there. The round indentation on the side of an M38A1 was for a power cable plug that was used to jumpstart airplanes when used as a runway service vehicle. The battery box blank on the cowl was left over from the M38A1 as well.

While it may be a coincidence, I noticed when I was doing body work, the small notch was very effective in draining water from between the fender and the hood.

IIRC I was told that the military didn't allow any Willys stamping on their vehicles?:? I think I read it in a tailgate FAQ on either the 2a or 3b page....
