Anyone here have a tubing notcher and would be willing to do a couple of tiny jobs for me? I'm talking exhaust-type stuff here, not rollbar tubes.

Gotta project-a-brewing in my fevered little brain and I need a creative outlet...

Can you use a hole saw?
The few times I needed notches I used an angle grinder

For small one time jobs you can sometimes use a lathe if you have acess to one. Put a hole saw in the chuck. to hold the tubing you can fab a clamp or something to mount the tubing to the carriage. It can be as simple as a block of wood with a hole bored through it with a holesaw. Cut a slot from edge of wood block to the hole to in effect make a pinch clamp. Then bolt it to the carriage at the angle you want and feed pipe to holesaw with the carriage. It worked for me one time.

Hole saw works good for small projects.

I built a crossover tube for my exhaust using a chop saw making two angled cuts at about 30~40 degress. Took a little experimenting to get it right, but it was weldable in the end.

Thanks Joel. The 20% expired today. Maybe I can get there tomorrow. I'll take the 10% coupon w/ me. You're on their e-mail mailing list? I'm at that Escondido location all the time. My wife calls it the Pick-N-Save for guys.

I'm on the mailing list. If you check those links tommorrow or the next day HF usually replaces the coupon with a new one.

I like to shop there, but its kind of out of the way. I want to get up and check out the 6" jointer again.

The notcher says it needs 14" clearance from chuck to table. The drill press pictured says "10" swing"... I take that to mean 10" max clearance, chuck to table...??

I have a 12" Delta benchtop drill press, so I'm figuring the notcher wouldn't work on mine... :(

Since both items linked are at HF, I'd do a fit-up in the store before I'd get the plastic out... ;)

Hate to ask a stupid question but, if your going to be using your drill press and a hole saw anyway why pay for the notcher?

It holds the tube solidly and doesn't allow it to rotate to give a good clean cut. Most also can tilt to allow for different angles of cut. It's a VERY handy tool when dealing with tube. I also bought mine from Harbor Freight and it works pretty well. Nickmil.

Nope that nothcer will NOT work with a table top drill press. However you can just clamp the nother to a table or something and just use a hand drill to run it. The pic shows a drill press but its not really needed.
