I've been tearing into Tonka's drivetrain this weekend & found a bit of a mystery:shock:

The gray housing is offa Tonk, the rusty one is from Maggie-

Maggies looks like the one shown in the FSM, Tonk's looks decidedly different. Note the holes for the clutch fork & bosses for- well whatever the heck those bosses are for on both sides.

Best idea I can come up with is Tonka's was designed with right hand drive in mind but maybe it was a speacial deal 'cause Tonk started out as a Zamboni. Anybody ever seen one of these before or have any clue on it?

    Thanks,

    H.

Can't tell you about Tonka, but Maggie's is 'xactly like Old Bill's. That is interesting though, I'd like to know what's up with that....

I bought an engine out of an GPW a while back and it had one just like your gray housing. Remembered it because the place where the cable should come out looked like it was broken out in the casting process. Does yours have part number 649221 cast into the right side near the transmission mounting face?

wait, scratch what i said...i thougt that pattern looked funny for a v6. the rust colored one matches the four cylinder housings i've played with.

Whew, I thought I was in the wrong forum. That bell looks nothing like the 225 V6...initially I thought it was a 198'er. Gotta state the engine in the post!

I've got a bellhousing here that *supposedly* came out of an M38a1, and it's identical in appearance to the greasygrungy one on the left.

The mystery is solved- it seems the gray one is a waggy/truck piece.

It appears how it got on there to begin with shall remain shrouded in the mists of time :(.

    Thanks all,

I pulled a power train out of a 69 CJ6 that had a bellhousing like the gray one. Mike

I have a 1971 with the v6 and from what I can recall the bellhousing resembles the gray one in your picture
