hello everyone ive started to make some improvements on my 1960 cj 5 got the body in pretty good shape again and put on new tires this week. IM planning on doing a steering upgrade next. Just a couple things that i notice that im concerned about though. First I have a tapping still in the engine it almost sounds like a little diesel engine now. I have the 225 v6 in it. However when i was out in leadville, colorado i pulled up next to an early cj and it actually sounded like mine. Is this just the way these dauntless v6 s sound or do i have some wear and tear issues going on here and time for a rebuild befors something bad happens. Tell ya about the other problem after i address this one thanx cw

I had a little tapping in mine when I got it also. I changed the oil and I added a quart of Lucas oil stabilizer. The old oil was pretty dirty. I will change it again in about 500 miles. But my little tapping went away. Of course that does not mean it will work for you if you have other problems.

Could be a sticking lifter. I suggest you drain the oil, fill with fresh oil... but substitute 1 quart of Marvel Mystery Oil for 1 qt of regular oil. I do this at every oil change. I had one lifter sticking pretty bad, # 4 cylinder wouldn't fire. I did the above, and within a few minutes it was running fine again.
I still get some tapping on occasion, I think it's normal on a 30+ year old, non-yet-rebuilt, 80K miles engine.
I use a qt of MMO at each oil change, and I run 4 oz of MMO in my fuel, about every other fillup.

There are several things that can cause a tapping noise. Don't know which is most common for the V6, but it could be a hydraulic valve lifter that does not fill completely, an exhaust leak, the fuel pump, a broken valve spring, a bent pushrod, a connecting rod bearing.

First I'd look at the oil pressure, especially when idling and at full operating temperature. The best tool for this is an aftermarket mechanical gauge.

Here's a good article with some more info: http://remanufactured-engines.com/page4.htm

    timing chain issues ?
    slack adjusters worn out/missing?
timing chain hitting timing cover ?
this noise would be more noticed at idle, might get quieter as RPMs increase

someone else who uses marvel...that oil rawx.! reccomendations, run some engine clean through it for a few minutes and then drain the oil and try the marvel first before you do anything else. the engine clean will help break up ugly oil clumps and sludge, then the marvel will continually help to clean it. this should make yer crank case and deck under the intake sparkly clean. my 97 dodge started ticking in my lifters. prolly 3-4 were ticking so i dumped some cleaner down it and drove it 30 miles and changed it. truck runs nice now. hopefully, you will have the same luck with yer jeep.
