I'm working on a little project on the Flattie and I picked upan F-head exhaust manifold on eBay for sheep. Well, it was here when I got home today and I noticed that it has what appear to be holes for an A.I.R. pump setup.

Were the late F-heads ever set up with smog stuff? That's the only thing that I can think of. I'm planning to just run some pipe plugs in there to block them off.

Yeah the later one's had the smog junk. I just saw a picture of an emissions-controlled F-head in the FSM. Plugging the holes with pipe plugs sounds like a good plan.

1/8" pipe plugs fit (barely), but I've read that oil pan drain plugs from the "Help" section are neater.

Thanks guys. I was actually thinking of recessed hex-socket pipe plugs for a neater look.

The exhaust manifold / header will come later. First up is going to be a split intake with a pair of Solex carbs, each one feeding a pair of cylinders. Nothinn fancy, just some exhaust tubing with a crossover tube and custom flanges cut from flat plate stock. I looked at just buying a Clifford header, but dang, the're well over $300 bux!

When I go to do the exhaust, I'm going to try to build a 4-2-1 setup and then tie it all into a stock exhaust system from an M-38. The M-38's used flanges and bolts to hold it all together instead of swaging the pipes, si it is far, far easier to replace bent components. The military muffler sounds waaaay better too. ;)

  8. Page 68 of the March 2006 JP Magazine has a great write-up on "Old School" Engine Performance mods for L and F-head motors. It covers dual carb intakes, high performance heads, thomas rocker arms and holley carb upgrades.

Some of the upgrades featured are pure unobtanium, like the Chuachuca Supercharger, but the Holley carb and the dual carb intake look do-able/fab-able.

When coupled with features like the Hatari build up, this article might make you want to re-evaluate the your thoughts on the magazine. If you already liked it, well Bree is still in the back too. :D

Thanks for the heads-up Joel. I stopped buying Jp magazine many moons ago, but I'll have to head out and get a copy of this one!

This one is good I got to admit. Makes me wish I had not gotten rid of the F-head.
