Clutch Time!

Hello all,
It's time for a clutch in the CJ, so I have a question. My Jeep is a 75, but the 258 is from a 79. Should I get the clutch for the 75 or the 79? May be a dumb question, but I don't want to get the wrong thing.

I'm not sure but I would think you would go for the year of the engine. It might be wise to go ahead and pull it and take it to the Auto parts store with you to compare. Hopefully I don't insult your intelligence but don't forget the throw-out bearing.

 

AFAIK they are the same. You can go to Napa Online and compare the part numbers for the two years.

IIRC the 304 can be upgraded to an 11" clutch. If the flywheel is drilled for the larger diameter, it will probably fit the 258 too.

 

Hi, I have a 1975 cj5 with a 1978 258 and just recently rebuilt the jeep from the ground up. Measure the clutch diameter to determine which to buy, use the engine year b/c chances are that the flywheel on the engine mates to a 79 clutch; mine was 10.5". I went through quite a struggle to figuere out what to use. The engine I have came out of a pacer I believe b/c in 78 the cj only had a 1 bbl carb and my engine is cast "C". The AMC's had some 2bbls and I was told by the previous owner that it came from an car. Good luck.
