OK, has anyone done a conversion to a CJ5 grill to flip the headlights back into the engine compartment, like the MBs used to do? I doesnt seem that hard, but wondering what to use for a headlight bucket that is cleaner than what it currently uses.

I'd think you could bend up some aluminum strap stock to mimic the barckets the MB/GPWs used, and pop-rivet it to the backside of the headlight bucket along with a hardware store hinge.

Then again, you could put the pipe down, back away and get yourself one of these to carry in the Jeep:

Here's another idea: I carry one of these little "Vulcan" lights in my Suburban, right next to my fire gear. I also have one permanently installed in my gear rack at the fire station and it goes on every run with me. Get teh 12v one, and bolt it to the wheelhouse behind one of the seats and you'll always have a fullycharged flash/spotlight that will run for hours. I trust my life to mine everyday!

Flipping the headlights around kinda limits what gets lit up, doesn't it?

The handheld lights are a much better idea. Or how about a cheepo HF pair of driving lights, put alligator clips on 'em for the battery, and mount them to magnets. Bingo, store them under the hood, then stick 'em where/when you need 'em!

/Gosh guys with all these hand held devices in your jeepos, you must have plenty of room for them ;) I think there is more room in an original mini-cooper than in my jeep ;) I thoguht about getting the XJ engine compartment lights, but i think just utilizing the headlights eliminates one more thing wired and actually with the CJ5 headlights there should be alot of light in the engine bay compared to the old MB lights. You know maybe i can chrome the underside of the hood and make it more reflective :) Good ideas though, i do like the idea Thad have about the magnets and cheapo lights :)

Go junkyarding - these little dudes put out quite a bit of light, and you can usually get them right where you need it the most:

Plus with the 15 ft of leash you can use them alongside or under the Jeep.

Dan look into the trailer clearance type lights. They come in different colors. I've even seen clear ones for tag lights.
You can mount one on each fenderwell and one the firewall.
Mount one to the hood also. Wire them to a switch under the hood.

I have lately seen some identical to the 90's GM pickups at auto parts stores. I don't remember the cost but it couldn't have been too bad because I almost bought one.

I've seen them for sale online, but (IIRC) like $40 - $60?

I got 3 from the JY for ~$8, made 2 good ones from the lot, and mounted the 2nd one inside the Jeep:
