What do you guys use to seal the threads of bolts that go into a cavity containing oil? (e.g. brake backing bolts into steering knuckle) Just looking for a cross section of what different people use before I decide. Thanks.

I use RTV. Permatex Ultra Black. Make sure the surfaces are "chemically" clean..

Thanks. I was leaning toward the Permatex molasses looking stuff. I'm glad no one suggested silicone. Thanks for the heads up on getting the surface clean. I'm cleaning in place, so that might present some challenges on the bottom holes. Depends on how much of the oil hasn't drained out.

OK, so what do you fellas use to make stuff "clean"? I've been doing some solvent, then wash with contact cleaner, brush, and blow out with compressed air. Better ways? Brake cleaner sometimes, too.

I've had good luck with brake cleaner on a q-tip for cleaning out bolt hole threads. Follow that up with a dry q-tip and you are good to go!

Brake cleaner seems to work good for me. I use it on ring gear bolts before applying loctite.

I've got a collection of brass brushes like come in gun cleaners. Dip them in Kano Kroil and then finish up with brake parts cleaner. The Permatex does a good job.

If any of you haven't tried Nashville's own Kroil it's amazing stuff. Ever seen My Big Fat Greek Wedding where the father sprays Windex on everything? My wife says that's me with Kroil...:)
