What does it take to put a scout 20 where a jeep 18 used to be. I am swapping the rear to a centered axle so there is no issue there. I have never taken a 20 apart or really looked at one for that matter. Need info on the input gear I guess you would call it (the one which attaches it to the output of the trans). I currently am running a sm420 with my 18 if that helps. The input gear I am using now is a six spline 29 tooth gear. (Looks like 18-8-23 stampped on it). Hope this is enough info for a little help. Thanks in advance.

If you are currently running a large indexing hole model 18 it is a direct bolt up to your existing adapter. You will need the matching input gear to your transfer case. If you look careful in the indexing hole of the transfer case you should be able to rotate the intermediate gear (idler gear) until you can see the stamped # on the intermediate. You will need to know that # to get the correct input gear. There are two possibilities of intermediate gear, 18-5-10 and 18-5-16. When you have the # then the rest is easy. Novak Enterprises has a real nice chart for matching the correct gears up on their chart. Scouts used two possible sets of gears and the pitch is different. You may also run into interference with the linkage mount on the side of the trans that may require some grinding of the linkage mount.
If you currently are running a small hole 18 transfer case then you will need to change the rear bearing retainer on the adapter from the T-90 style to a T-86 style or if your adapter does not have a provision for this, you will need to change the adapter to the larger indexing hole style. Nickmil.
