304 to 401

    What will i need to change to swap my 304 to a 401 in my 73

    Well, you better stock up on parts 'cause you are going to break a lot of stuff:) That is a lot of motor for a Jeep. I would think it's pretty much a bolt in though. 304 thru 401 share the same block and motor mounts. What trans have you got???

    Besides a 401? Not much. It's as close to a drop-in as can be. You need a 401 flywheel - the AMC V8s are externally balanced and each displacement has its own. They are still available new - search the IFSJA forum for a source.

    The dealership where I worked had a new '73 with a crate 401 installed. Very quick she was.

    this will be in a dirt jeep for the time being till rumblebee is put back together.we are lowering and beefing it up while putting the new tube and nose on for mostlikely next year.the 401 will end up in the street jeep for pushing sprint cars and weekend cruising for cynfl.till rumblebee is done we are going to run it in the 76 at the local dirt track pushing sprints.just want to get thru 1 year then put the 304 back in after it is rebuilt.
