I kinda like the idea Mike. I would do it but getting the Jeep to pass inspection around here might be tough, the mechanics would have no idea how to start the thing.

Last inspection on the Jeep I had to start it for the inspector. She was clueless.

I was thinking along the same lines but I was going to use an electronic alarm system with the remote starter option not so much for the alarm but for the remote starter. Then all you would need to start the jeep is the little remote.

Make sure it's out of gear when you do it. Nickmil.

Boyink, correct me if I'm wrong, but the ECJ5 doesn't have an electronic clutch switch that forces you to push the pedal to the floor when starting the Jeep, does it? I think that and the parking brake light(again, not present on ECJ5s) are the only differences between manual and automatic remote starters.

Pretty much once you got to the "electronic" part, the answer was no....R)

Handy for starting in gear when you don't want to put the clutch in...and using the starter motor to move the Jeep when you can't get the motor started.

    No parking brake light either.

Why stop with keyless ignition, Michael?

Michael, those rocks look quite big. Shouldn't we go around?

    R)

FWIW, I installed a "short" switch. Basically shorts the hot to the coil to ground. Keeps someone from hotwiring it from under the hood 'less they cut the wires and start from scratch....

Boyink, use a 12v latching relay. This style relay engages and disengages when the coil is energized. Wave the magnet over the switch when you get in and energize the relay, wave it over the relay again and shut the motor off. I have acess to 250ma magnetic switches if you are interested and could look into the latching relays.

Thanks guys...I think I'm just going to weld a hunk of angle iron up behind the dash and mount the current key switch in it, then find a off-on-momentary toggle to swap into my switch panel. I like the idea of only worrying about a key if need be, otherwise just jumping in and hitting the switch.

Hudsonhawk, So you just need to slap those covers in an emergency to kill the engine?

That is all, and actually those switches kill all the electronics (Fuel Injection, HEI, guages etc.) and accessories. The only things that work are the park/driving/brake lights and the winch.

A friend of mine who makes medieval armour made it for me out of 20 guage stainless. He used the old card board box as a template. cut the metal out, folded it and rivetted it together.

A wire from the battery to the coil and a screwdriver will take about 30 seconds to leave your parking spot MT. How about a magnetic switch that activates a relay to isolate the entire electrical system. Lock the hood or alarm it and doesn't matter what you do under the dash, it ain't leaving without you. Or you can use a key safe mounted on the dash with a code (number) pad on it. A lot of stuff to go through, any good thief will beat any system you put on it except one. Take the steering wheel with you. Still won't save the stereo, but then again who needs that anyway. My 2 pennies.
