My 74 with 258 does not have a coolant recovery tank, cap, etc. Should it? Did it originally? If not should I set it up for one?

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

according to the parts manual, your year did not have a fan shroud, fan clutch, or recovery bottle; the Jeep could have a 4 blade or seven blade fan though.
only one radiator listed as well
that doesn't mean you couldn't add a coolant recovery tank...
If it is pushing coolant on the ground, than a recovery tank is a good thing
w/out the tank, sometimes it will push coolant out to a lower level and stay there; this would be considered normal in my book

Recovery tank is a good add-on. You can get a good one at NAPA for about ten bucks and the inner fender is a good location for the tank. Works like a champ. When coolant is needed, it siphons from the tank and once you shut down and the engine cools, overflow returns to the tank. Keeps your garage floor clean, the animals healthy, and you never have to add coolant unless you have a hose rupture.

    Highly recommended !!

You need to check your radiator cap. Early non tank style caps won't have the second gasket needed to recover the fluid. Pop yours off and see. You should have a gasket that seals inside the neck and one that seals the top of the neck. If yours has a metal tensioner on top instead, you will have to buy a new style cap(about 8 bucks)
