My CJ5 was built in March of 1970 VIN 8305017 364511 and has the D44 limited slip diff with 4.88 gears. Which lsd would it be? The jeep only has 26K miles of light use on it. There are no leaks so would there be any reason to to open up and look it over? Hoping to just change gear oil but have heard the lsd is weak.:v6:

I had thought that all the short-fendered CJs had Powerlocks, but I recall that someone here with a '71 has a TracLock. Clearly, you want a Powerlock ... the early TracLocks don't withstand shock load very well.

$sink is probably right, but I think the right thing to do is pull the cover and look.

If its still working OK w/ only 26K miles would you really need to check it?

if you are fimiliar enough with what a track lok versus powerlock looks like, you can simply take out the oil fill plug and look in there with a flashlite. but it probably wouldn't hurt to pull the cover, inspect things, and change the oil.

Yup, in fact, I'd change ALL the fluids.........

No doubt, all fluids are getting changed. I just didn't want to remove the diff cover. I've had trouble getting them to seal good in the past. But if you think it needs a good once over... Any where I can see an exploded view of the two diffs?:v6:

I believe that Jeeps with the tapered axle setup (19 spline axles) will have Power Lok units. Jeeps with flanged axle 44's such as a 71 has will be Trac Lok.

Mine is apparently a very early Flanged D44 LSD built in March of 1970. Its original (jeeps been in the family since new). What's a good source for the clutch packs? Even if OK I'd like to get one for the eventual repair.:v6:

My 70 V6 had a trac loc it.

It does have the flanged axles too.

Parts list shows power-loc with tapered axles and trac-loc with flanged axles. I think Nickmil would be a good source of info on these, if he chooses to chime in...... OOOHHHH....NICK...........

I have a 71 with D44 flanged, V6 - Trac Lock. Blew it up a couple of times and replaced it with a Detroit.

I wouldn't bother rebuilding a Trac Lok. I would replace it with either a Power Lok or Tru Trac. If you want something more positive a Detroit would fit the bill.

Thanks Tim and Norm for the links. They gave me the application and technical data I needed. Sadly though, it appears I have the Trac-loc as the powerlock was never applied to the D44 flanged axle. I guess it'll have to do for a while, more important things to do first. But a swap to a locker gets added to the to do list. Thank you everyone for your input.:v6:
