oops crank damage?

    I accidentally dropped my 225 crank on the concrete from about 2 1/2 feet. It pretty much landed flat across several beefy counter weights. Do you think it is OK? I think with the beefyness built into this thing that it is prolly OK. I'll have it checked for cracks.

    I don't think cracks would be so worrysome as bending. The books say you should always stand a crank on end, and tie it up so it won't fall over... I thought both standing on end and not falling over was because it might get bent. You can make a rough check for runout by putting it in the block without the rear main seal and seeing if it spins freely. You could also plastigage at different rotations.

    It's fine... If it landed on the counter weights and didn't damage any of the machined journals.... If it won't withstand that, I wouldn't expect it to hold up to the forces and thermals of normal use...

    I have a feeling the crank won this round. It blew out a chunk of concrete about 3 inches across and prolly 3/8-1/2 inch deep! Beefy huh?

    IIWM, I would not hesitate to chalk up the oops as a bad experience and take it to the machine shop (unless it landed 'zactly flat which is nearly impossible). That's just me but I spent a short tour of duty in the engine remanufacturing industry and a loose crank bends relatively easy. If that kind of drop happened out in the plant, it would definately go back to the balancing jig or to the scrap bin.

    Not to scare you, but be cautious. Yours should be 100% fixable.
