Problem with mounting the hitch

My 75 CJ5 didn't have a hitch when I bought it, but I recently found a stock one from a 60's CJ that I was told would fit. However, this hitch has two metal brackets in the center that don't go to anything on the frame or body of my Jeep. For a stock 75 hitch, should these brackets be there or not? Will this hitch work on my frame? Thanks in advance.

In Jeep lingo it's not a hitch - it's a draw bar. IIRC the draw bar on intermediates is supported by angle brackets to the outside of the frame on both ends, and two brackets that go to the middle of the rear crossmember. Pretty good picture in this thread http://www.earlycj5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26016

Thanks for responding. So from what I gather, as long as I attach the two brackets that go up under the frame and the two shown in the picture, I could cut off the two center brackets and it'll still be functional? I found a picture of an early Jeep which shows what I believe to be the mounting plate where those two central brackets attach. Again, my 75 doesn't have this mounting plate attached to the frame.

Yeah, those diagonal members inside the frame arent present on an intermediate. I thnk they are there to support a pintle hook mounted in the center on the back - a historical-military thing.

The two brackets on that attach to each end of the draw bar bolt to the side of the frame, behind the tires. The near side is mostly hidden by the license plate on original CJ-5's jeep. I presume those are the brackets under the frame that you are referring to. Yep, that's it. Should be plenty strong.

    jpflat2a what's that noise?

    posting pics for future reference
note extra re-inforcement for pintle hook
regardless, the brackets have to go to the outside of the frame due to the rear tank

Thanks for posting those pictures, they're fantastic. Edit: Wait a minute....that drawbar has different frame mounts than mine because of the rear tank. Darn it, looks like I'll have to find a 74/75 hitch. If I had a brain it'd be lonesome...

Mine is mounted like the first one, does that mean it had a pintle hitch on it?

that's a good question, don't know if there is an answer
    anybody ????
can't see factory going with all the reinforcement if it's not needed
we never sold one with a pintle hook that I know of

Just my foggy memory on this, but I thought my '73 had the pintle reinforcement, and it did not come with a pintle hook. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of the back end. Maybe the pintle-plate-less draw bar is a '74-on thing?

I have a 74 tub and frame in pretty good condition that also has the reinforcement. It doesnt appear to ever had a pintle, just a regular stock ball hitch. But who knows? It was built in November of 73 (74 model). I plan to use it to replace the tub on my 73.
