mainshaft gear help

    Can't get the mainshaft gear off the shaft. Tried both pullers I have and can't either one on it to pull. Have no access to a flame wrench for heat. Yes, I took the big nut off ( which was the first time I found one that was really tight.:mad: So what now? Find the right puller? I can't believe this thing is stuck on there like this. Usually the come right off. I almost pulled the shaft out of the tranny. BTW, this trans and t/c are out of JEEP and lying helplessly on the cold garage floor. TIA

    He's trying to get the main gear in the T/C of the output shaft of the tranny.... both mine slid right off by hand...small hole T/C so he can't seperate without getting this gear off..

    Well, Go buy a 15 dollar propane torch at Walmart or somewhere.

    Get w/d and soak the area and Heat and let cool gently. This will be smokey---- With a long punch or long bolt--- or long hard wood handle -- to the main shaft tap on the shaft and gear over and over and over. Most likely it is Glued with varnish/slug.

    Sometimes however in some cases an old Jeep that ran an old D18/20 with a V8 and low gears with Big tires-- High torque forces can wedge the Main t/c gear so hard that it distorts splines and forever locks the gear onto the splines. This is rare though.

    If there is wear on the main shaft, the gear splines might be settled into
    a the wearon the mainshaft. The gear inside splines then rotate a few ten thousands into a slot that is not in line with the unworn spline. This causes the gear to get hooked on the worn part of the spline. So that if you counter rotate the gear back out of the wear where it is settled, it will slide off or at least worked off . To do this you would jam a piece of wood between the Gear and the t/c and tap the reverse/1st gear in the tranny to talk jar the bull gear(t/c) back a few tenth thousands off the microscopic wear on the main shaft----- then tap on the main shaft and gear until it slides off. So all that you are doing is re-aligning the gear splines with the mainshaft spline.

    Again this sometimes happens with a t/c that has been run with a lot of
    torque---- but on a 40 year old t/c any thing is possible.

    Yea sorry. T-90 and Dana 18 out of an ECJ5. I'm on the right board ain't I ? Hammer time huh? I guess I was hoping for a decent puller that I don't have to be suggested.
