My first post to this board. I have a new early CJ5 project I am putting parts together and I'm looking for a suitable powertrain. I have a 1960 Frame with a 1958 tub that I am starting with. I have seen a AMC 304 V8 and separately a T150/D20 combo that I can get reasonably. Will this combination fit in a 1960 Frame? The CJ is going to be a stocker with mostly limited road use. I have had several CJ's in the past but this is my first frame-up project so take it easy on me!

If you use the 58 or 60 axles, the rear axle is offset and the D20 has a centered rear output. The driveshaft will be short, so I expect you'll need a rear axle with a centered pumpkin.

There's no problem with the frame AFAIK - the AMC V8 is about the same size and weight as the SBC, and plenty of those were put in CJs. Not so many today becasue the V6s are widely available and fit the engine compartment more easily.

The T-150 is a Ford transmission, so a SBF will work too.

    Welcome to the group.
1st yes it will fit but a V6 would be a better choice.
    2nd where you from?

I live in Breckenridge, Colorado. I should have indicated on the initial post that I have a pair of 68 Jeepster axles for the project thus the Dana 20 in the mix. I may be able to pickup the entire powertrain in working condition for about $200 thus my interest in going this route. My other option is waiting for a 225/T86/D20 combo but it might be awhile for that one.

Is the Jeepster rear axle a Dana 44? Some came with 30s, and that would be too weak for a V8 (too weak for the stock V6 even).

<edit> You'll have to move the spring pads on a Jeepster axle too.

Yes, the Jeepster rear is a Dana 44. Front is a Dana 27. I have done some measurements vs. my 60 Frame and it looks like the spring pads on the Jeepster axles are fine. I will be using leaf springs from a 60's CJ5 which are the same 1.75" width.

Jeepster springs were outboarded stock, the frame is the width as a CJ-5.

Yes, that was my point. Thanks for the clarity Sparky. The rear Jeepster springs are wide too - the fronts are the same width as the CJ.

So it's just a matter of moving the spring pads in on the Dana 44 to the right width? From what I remember of the 44 that shouldn't be a big deal. I guess I must have measured the front and then assumed the rear being ok. My bad.

Proper spring pads in the proper location. As Tim indicated the rear Jeepster springs are also wider.

But yes, it would be that easy if you had the right spring pads.
