Pulled the trans and TC off the motor today to start getting it cleaned up for the new paint. Drained the gear oil from both and need to clean as much out as I can. What's the best solvent to use? I'm going back w/ synthetic. BTW hit the back part of the engine and the bell housing w/ a wire brush while I was at it. Man, the bell housing is shining like a diamond in a goats... well you know. Engine's cleaning up real good too. No rust under the grease and paint. Buick really globbed that paint on too.:v6:

    I'd use brake cleaner.

Mineral spirits, then clean any oily residue last with brake cleaner or lacquer thinner.

I'd hesitate to use regular synthetic in the transmission and transfer.

I think Novak specifically mentions not too due to brass in the trans? Check their knowledge base.

Anyway, if you do use something like Redline MTR I think that's safe on brass, low sulpher.

I do rough cleaning with kerosene. It's cheap and really doesn't leave much of an oily residue.

Thanks for the info guys. Isn't camp fuel kerosene? I think I have some of that on hand and I know I got brake cleaner. I'll be using Royal Purple Maxgear Synthetic. Its good for limited slip gear boxes as well as safe for soft metals, so I can use it in the diffs, trans, and TC.:v6:
