Never seen one on an f-head. I do have an exhaust manifold that was set up for one though. IF you are emissions exempt and IF you're not required to have it to pass insp and IF your pump is shot, take it off. With a HP rating of 70 or so from the factory I'd doubt you'll see any major increase in "power". If it ain't broke..........................

Interesting ... you should keep it as a historical artifact. ;)

It'd be interesting if you could post a pic from the left side. I can see the diverter valve on the top of the engine, but I'd like to see the air injection manifold too.

Re the power, the only increase you will see is becasue you are removing the parasitic load of the pump (1/4 horse? 1/2 horse? probably less). The system does not otherwise affect performance. Folks hate them because they are usually a maintenance headache - removed becasue broken. Not a lot of reason to remove it if it's working ok.

I have a '70 cj w/ the smog pump on a 225. Its off. I pulled the piping off today while prepping the engine for paint. Besides the parasitic power loss you have to consider its plumbed right back into the carb. It has to affect combustion. When I pulled the piping off there was at least a half teaspoon of charcoal laying in each port. This crap goes back through your intake, valves, and combustion chambers. Not something I want.:v6:

:? I'm not sure what you are referring to (Lee? R. Lee?). All the AI does is put air into the exhaust gases after the gases leave the combustion chamber. This lowers the hydrocarbon emissions, becasue it adds O2 when the unburnt HCs are hot enough to burn.

The connection to the carburetor is a vacuum line that goes to the diverter valve and shuts off the air on decelleration I think - prevents backfire.

On newer cars the AI adds O2 to the cat, for the same reason, except in the cat more gases will burn becasue of catalysis.

    Cool

I also learned what that extra hose connection on my oil bath is for. I am assuming it is connected somewhere for the smog pump.

Look at the plumbing, I grant you the smog pump is gone, but there is only two options. One, from the head to the pump to the carb, or the carb to the pump to the head. One way, you get exhaust to the carb. Hence, you get carbon filling up the passageways. Or, from the carb to the head, which steals O2 and fuel from the intake. SO, tell me which one is OK. Personally, from the amount of carbon I have found in the carb valley between the two sides of the intake I would go with #1.:v6:

Are you confusing the EGR with the air injection? The EGR does not need the belt driven pump.
    Or maybe the PCV?

thanks for the info, this pump is working fine and does just pump o2 strieght to the exhaust manifold, nothing to the carb. I guess I will leave it as is untill it breaks or falls off.
