I am restoring a 69 cj5. I have installed new king pin bearings. There is what appears to be a fill plug in the side of the knuckles. If they are to be filled with gear oil there was no gasket in the bottom king pin, the oil would leak out wouldn't it.:? :? :? :? The u joints in the axles have no seals which would indicate they would pickup lube while rotating!

The older 4X4s used a closed steering knuckle lubricated with 90 gear oil. There was a seal with a felt like cover on the inside of the knuckle, this was held in place by half moon shaped metal plates. I suppose if there was no gasket on the bottom kingpin you could use sillicone.

The FSM states to use 140 wt gear oil but many prefer to use knuckle pudding a mixture of 140 and axle grease. (can O worms)R)

Never used a gasket on the bottom kingpin. Never had a leak.

What captain cj said is correct. It is/was not 90wt it was 140wt oil. Do a search for "knuckle pudding" you'll find tons of discussion on the subject.

Thanks folks at least this confirms my suspicions that something should be in there. At last I can sleep tonight. This is going to be an everlasting project. I am sure I will be back. Thanks again! :)

....actually doesn't the recipe call for 90W + grease? That'd essentially bring the mixture close to that of 140W. :?

    R) R) R)

i used 50% 90wt and 50% grease mixed to a delicious consistency that grossed the neighborhood kids.

later i was able to find 140/90w and topped it off with that.

re. the gaskets on the lower trunion (kingpin). the shims that you use to adjust the tension seem to seal it well.

seems to me there is a tech piece on the stud mod. if you need. there are also articles such as dr. vern's and the service manual about replacing the trunion bearings. there is also some threads here i believe.

    they helped me alot.
