CJ5 or CJ3B Identification ?

I purchased what I think is a tub from a 1958 and the only tag I could find is on the drivers side, outside of the firewall with an "ID 42039 COLO" and "Control Number 241939" on it. From the on-line research I have done it looks like a CJ3B would be the only candidate if the 42039 is the serial #. The fellow I bought it from is having to get a replacement title and I would just like to know what a VIN from this time period would be made up of.

That sounds like a Colorado Assigned VIN... Where are you?

Purchased the tub from a fellow in Loveland.

Is there any way to tell from just the tub whether it's a CJ3B or CJ5?
Not sure it really matters much but it would be nice to know.

Don't the 3B's have two ovals in the rear bed where the rare seat fit? I think the 5 had a bracket. Cowl on the CJ3B is high. have pics you can post?

Looks like a 65 and up based upon the lack of the battery cover. If the tailgate is the original one with the Jeep stamp then post 70ish

However, that does look like CJ3 grill.

CJ5 Grill, the 3B is squared off at the top.

No battery tray on firewall should narrow the year down.

It's pre 1970, since it has the under-seat fuel filler (among others), and after 1965 (?).

Nice looking '5 tub. I'm green with envy. How much did you pay for it and do you know of anyothers? Tubs like that are hard to find w/o a lot of rust here in WI.

I think they are a little more common here but needless to say I was very happy with the condition. I think I did pretty well. Got the tub, with a clear title (not in hand yet, but in process), rollbar, tailgate and soft top with doors for $200. After the engine/tranny/tcase I will have less than $500 in parts and will have all the major parts I need to put the thing together. My goal was to try and build a free CJ5 from parts that people were tossing. My realistic goal is to only have about $1,000 in parts in it when I'm done. I am going to get my kids involved so they can see what is involved in doing a frame-up build and then hopefully it will be my daughters first vehicle (she is 13 now so I gave myself a little breathing room)!
