I have recently aquired an immaculate 1980 Golden Eagle CJ-5 and I was curious if anyone could answer me a few questions.

What makes it a "Golden Eagle"?

Is it necessary to widen the axels, or will spacers do?

Does anyone make a version of the half top for the CJ-5?

I appreciate any suggestions or comments coming from knowledgable and long-time jeep enthusiasts!

I think the "Golden Eagle" was basically a trim option offered from around '77-'82 or so. Unless maybe it had the rear dana 44 axle, but I don't think so. I'm sure someone will pipe in.

As for the axles, they were narrow on the CJ's until '82 when they went to the "Wide Track" until '86 1/2. I've never used wheel spacers, but I know they are strongly discouraged.

Welcome aboard!! Nice lookin GE. Of course, we want more pics than your avatar... :D ;)

As said, the GE was a trim/decal package.
Why do you think you want to make the axles wider? Driven sensibly, CJ5s with narrow track axles are as safe as many other SUVs as far as rollover potential. I'd recommend not making any changes to your axle width.

I don't think there is a soft half-top on the market for a CJ5. Try a marine/boat canvas shop, they can make a custom top for you that will be priced similar to full tops available from the big catalogs.

Is this what you're looking for?

That link won't take you directly to it but if you search for a "Bikini Top" you may find what you are looking for.

Your Avatar shows your Jeep with a bikini top on it........Is there something wrong with that one?

No, nothing is wrong with it. I just want something to keep all wind off during cold weather. I am also looking to put a subwoofer enclosure in the cargo area and would like to keep it hidden and out of as much of the elements as possible.

Full soft tops are available from several mfrs. That would work out better if you ever add a front hoop to make a roll cage.

For a half-soft top, IIRC Beechwood Canvas will make them, $$$ though.

Re the SW, an open car isn't a great environment for music. If you want a fat bass, generally the enclosure and the cabin (car interior) are resonant and give a lot of boost to the bass in a limited frequency range. You might be disappointed by the quantity of bass you get from the woofer.

Headphones work well, but they are illegal in many (most?) areas. Quality ear buds that fit tightly in the ear canal (ie Etymotics) will give you great sound isolation and make you less obvious to your local LEO. Just be careful - you'll be isolated from road noises and engine noises too.

<edit> Re the pictures, you need to host them somewhere. Then put the url between the [IMG] keywords, with no spaces.

Back in the day (oooh....what...'87-ish?) I had a "system" in my '66 CJ5:

    Kenwood head unit
    Kenwood eq
    Kenwood 80W amp
    Sony 20 W Amp.

The Sony was hooked to 6" 3 way dash speakers.

The eq/80W amp ran to the rear, where I built an enclosure that took up most of the rear between the fenderwells. I built it flush with the top of the fenderwells, and covered it to match the seats. It had 10" subs and 6x9 3-ways in it with crossovers - I forget the bass cut-off frequency. I had the amp mounted on the back, and everything with quick-connects and handles so I could pull it out.

While I agree with Tim in theory, in practice it was a darn nice-sounding system. Cruising around the local beach it did what it was intended to do - turn heads (this was sorta before the big stereo craze had hit around here).

The bass wasn't chest-rattling, but it was very clean and clear.

Any good stereo shop should be able to design a box for you that will deliver "good enough if not phat bass"....

I carried a pair of Panasonic speaker cabinets from an all-in-one stereo system on a couple of desert trips. I'd put them on the roof of the CJ-6 (Meyer cab) at camp. After a few trips with lots of dirt road cruising and a exploring, the cabinets fell apart.

Later my Dad made a single speaker cabinet that would fit in the passenger side corner of the floor. It had about 2 quarts interior capacity, and worked well as a radio speaker. Very complicated angles - I wish I still had it. IIRC the other channel was on the wheel well behind the driver.

A great resource for Jeep vehices is the Standard Catalog Of Jeep vehicles. It has all of the changes from model year to model year and what all of the various packages consist of such as the Golden Eagle package. Mine is at home or I would look up the Golden Eagle to see what it consisted of. Basically it was just a dress up package of decals.
