Does anyone here know the differences between a CJ 5 and a CJ 6?? I know it is longer, but is the length just added to the back or is it wider as well???

Let's say for instance you have an intermediate CJ 5 and you would like to put the axles, body, and drivetrain into a CJ 6 frame. Is that even possible??? I realize that I would have to extend the rear out to match the wheelbase, but I'm wondering if the body would line up at all????

    I'm smokin' crack here aren't I???

afaik, yes, the widths are the same. you should, emphasize should, be able to swap parts for the same year vehicles. front clip/windshield should be the same, seats=same.

body should be the same width. has added panels/supports.

CJ6 is 20 inches longer added between the wheels.

The stretch is in the middle, behind the door opening and before the wheel well.

The CJ-6 is a CJ-5 with 20" added to the middle. The frame rails are longer, and a little more steel is added to the bottom of the rail, otherwise the same.

    Search the forums - we've discussed making a CJ-6 from a CJ-5 before.

Not trying to be a smartass, but I have a 75 CJ-5 and a 75 CJ-6 sitting in my backyard. If you want EXACT measurments or differences, ask me what you need as the 5 just donated its V8, powersteering, hood, glass, etc to my 6 and is about to leave.
I can tell you the frames are made the same, but the 6 frame is not a factory cut and lengthed 5 frame. It is one piece front to rear with the engine section boxed (as is the 5) All sheetmetal is the same except the middle where the upper flat floorpan is extended (and the sides by the wheels ofcourse)

Ed, that's a good point, the factory didn't actually cut a CJ5 frame and add in a 20" piece for the production CJ6.

I think when guys say it's just like a CJ5 "with 20" added between the door opening and the rear wheel well", they acknowledge that the material was "added" to the drawing in the design phase... but for manufacturing the frame rails are one-piece, just like the CJ5... but longer.
The terminology we so often use here, "20" was added" could be misleading to some. Thanks for pointing that out! :)

Also the frame rails are the same as used in the Jeepster and Commando (bullnose). The Jeepsters were derived from the CJ-6, and are essentially a CJ-6 with an upscale body.

I have a 1968 CJ5 v6 t14A trans t18 and would like to add 1976 after market 1 1/8 swaybar to the front and standard 7/8 swaybar to the rear.
is the frame width the same 1968 and 1976 so the swaybar will mount?
I think I can make to rest mount OK.
