Is that to hold the windshield down. Is it necessary?

Yeah, they are necessary. I had the windsheild laying down on my 70' CJ5, hit a bump, and the windsheild bounced up and broke on the way back down.
I will never drive with my windsheild down and no strap again.

The one I have is tore up but has a metal tab on the end

It was either on a '60 cj5 or on the 65 parts JEEP. Not sure if it is the same for the intermediates

I will never put the winshield down but for originality I want to purchase the strap. I guess I need to find the one with the metal tab at the end.... thanks for the help.

If you're really concerned about the metal end (or any of the rest of the strap hardware), may I suggest that you check a tack shop? They will have what you need. If they don't, check a better shop.

    What? :?
If the windsheild is made to be put down, then let her come down. :)
My brother and I used to cruise down the Interstate to get to the trail head with the windsheild down. Sunglasses did little at 65 mph+, so we resorted to wearing full faced motorcycle helmets. There is a hell of a lot more wind coming at you with the Jeep's aerodynamics then if you were on a motorcycle.
Sure got a lot of thumbs up from other drivers though.
Wheeling with the windsheild down is AWESOME!!! There is absolutely no glare, and your only blind spots are limited to the amount of tubing on your roll cage. I think I've wheeled and drove the CJ's more with the windshield down then up. If it has that feature, use it!!! That could be argued by my girlfriend as that is also my excuse for the horn.

yeah, Driving through town is one of the coolest things about a jeep, definitely try it. All you need is eye protection.

That strap is not even close. The stap is a webbed material with 1 twist type fastener, 2 eyes & the metal tab. The photos are of the original one on my Jeep, it ain't pretty, but its OEM.

Original CJ5... thank you for the pictures! OK.. anyone out there have an extra one of those in new condition they want to sell???

I must admit it is fun to drive a Jeep with the winshild down. I have done it many times with the CJ-7's I have owned. The time I have put it down on my CJ-5 it sure looks to me like the hood is going to get pushed in from the weight of the windshield. The other option with mine is that it can easily be removed!

The motorcycle helmet idea is a damn good one!!

The picture jogs my memory - that strap looks right. Can't help the frayed corners, but if it's faded, you can dunk it in some Rit dye and make it black again.

Now that I think about it, that is the style strap I had on mine when I bought it. It looked worn and ugly, so with a little help from my leatherman, off it came. I wish I kept it knowing that they are a hot commodity.
For mine now, I use a buckled tie down strap. The same kind that cinches your bikini top tight on the back through the footman loops.
You can find them anywhere, hardware stores, etc., I got mine at an Outdoor clothes and camping supply store. They sell all kinds off webbing and straps for packs, bindings, ect.

Here's the skinny...just got off the phone with Beachwood. The correct part # seems to be 5E1932T. This is a strap with 1 turn fastener & 2 grommets & a metal end. Cost $30.00, none in stock, they can make 1 in 2 or 3 days. I ordered 1 as I don't trust my frayed one. I told him to expect a small flurry of orders mentioning ECJ5 forum.

The strap in the catalog that "appears" to be what we want (part # 2A1923) is for an earlier model, it is 25" long...goes from the windshield to a footman loop on the grill. Not for a 74.

    Hope this helps.

Got my new strap... Beechwood Canvas!! Fast service .. nice looking product!!

OK.. call me an idiot but how is this strap supposed to be hooked up when it is on the Jeep? (I know it doesn't really matter but trying to find out how it is supposed to look!) I was looking at the pictures from Original CJ5 but I cant see how it gets cliped up when it is not in use holding the windshield down.

I know to install it I need to remove the footman loop and put it through the strap to attach the strap to the Jeep. Also, when it is holding the windshield down how does it go??

    Thanks in advance!

Military surplus shops sell a high grade velcroe strap that would work perfect. How do you spell velcroe?

In the folded position, you can allow it to just dangle behind your rear view mirror, it will be concealed.

When you install the strap on the footman loop the turn fastener will need to face the windshield, because when you lay the w/s down, the strap will be inverted, if that makes any sense. Then simply place both eyes over the turn fastener & twist. The one on my windshield is installed backwards...my mistake in re assembly after paint.
