What is the difference between a leaf pack with 9 leafs vs. 11? Is it primarily different to support added engine weight or is it for ride quality? What were the stock leaf packs on a 72?

sometimes both as weights between the engines differ
for 72 there were a couple different springs available
    7 leaf
    9 leaf
    10 leaf
    12 leaf
obviously, the number in the assembly can effect ride quality, with more usually meaning a stiffer/firmer ride, but not always.
factory 10s seem stiff, but I have seen Rancho 5s that rode worse !
all depends on leaf thickness and rate of deflection/give/bounce whatever that term is

    I agree with jpflat2a.

I wheeled the heck out of my stock 10 leafs and it rode a little rough. I got some Rancho 2.5" lift springs (5 leafs), and I would damn near bounce out of my seat driving over a paper clip.
I'll never run Rancho again. WAY TOO STIFF!!!

I agree about the Rancho system, I would go with the softride Rancho lift.

I am planning on running 30x9.5 tires on this Jeep and would like to keep it stock height. The CJ is mostly for putting around town and occassional mild trail use. I was running 31x10's on a 74 CJ5 that I owned with no lift so I am thinking on this one to just get replacement springs that are close to the stock configuration.

If you want a better ride and are willing to do a bit of work. Replace the springs with stock YJ units. They are 2.5" wide and ride a lot better then the ECJs do. The only problem is you have to cut off all of your spring hangers etc and put on new hardware.

There is a write up in the tech section on this.
