My tank developed a leak (rust through) while replacing springs last weekent. I can find gas tanks to fit the 75CJ5 several places. However, I have been unable to locate a skid plate. I'd like to purchase all necessary components from one vendor (tank, sending unit, plate, etc) any suggestions?

    Thanks

I don't think you'll find an OEM style skid anyplace other than a junkyard. Do you have the skid plate now? If you buy a tank specifically for the '75, it will work with the stock skid plate.

Yes, I have the original plate. However, it's rusted through worse than the tank - not much left of it.

Had to go to a junkyard for mine. I didn't have any luck finding a new one. That was a few years ago though. There might be someone out there now that carries them.

They have aftermarket ones. Plus, they have bigger tanks as well.

They do sell a plastic tank and skid plate kit - but the only skid plate listed by itself is for 76 and newer. Are you sure that this is a match?

    Thanks

Frame's different on a '76. Might work - might not. I know that several people have put the later tanks in the earlier Jeeps, so you could probably make it work with some cutting and fitting.

Where are you located? We might be able to point you toward a source, depending.

I made my own out of a plate of steel and a pieces of flat bar. BTW ditch the pad that came with your tank and replace it with closed cell foam. The jute pad hold moisture that rusts the tank.

Last week, during my engine swap, I also swapped a missing bracket for the gas tank. Knowing it was empty for some time, I poured gas in and saw that it was leaking from about 20 pinhole spots all over the bottom. I found that new metal tanks are 100 bucks and plastic kits are 215. I didn't want to spend bucks on a new tank and wanted it running in a day or so. I tried 2 thick coats of rubberixed underbody spray.....nope, leaked right through it. I used a wire brush and gas (go figure) to remove most of it and sandblasted the rest to clean metal. I also removed any loose rust from inside the tank. A buddy came over with West Systems 105 and 205 Exopy and after 2 thin coats, no more gas leak and it holds fine. later I covered it with the black undercoat spray and it looks fine. I also installed a clear filter inside the frame rail between the tank and fuel pump so to prtect the pump from rust.
This is just an idea if you want a quick cheap fix and plan on replacing the tank down the road.
