 Hello All! I have been reading your posts for awhile now. Thanks for the all the info and good ideas. I am doing a little change to the old jeep and I am having troubles figuring out what to do with the steering shaft. I am currently swapping in a amc 360 out of a 78 cherokee, having a t-18 laying on the garage floor and took the power steering out of the cherokee.
My problem being that the joints don't match up!! The new ps box has the rag joint end and the old manual has the ball knuckle end, also the steering column ends are not the same diameter.
:) Can anyone give me some insight on different steering shafts that I could use or fab up something from various shafts. Thanks for the help

this should be as simple as replacing the manual box bell coupler (at the box end) with one for power steering; the insides are the same, it's the p/s box stub shaft diameter and splines that are different vs the manual box; the rag joint becomes a paperweight or ??
all of this assuming you are using the stock 72 column, upper shaft and u-joint.

Flaming River has shafts and couplers. A bit pricey though. Advance Adapters has spud shafts that you can use to change the size and spline count on the box too. IIRC

Thanks guys for the info. The flaming river and aa sound like great ideas! However this is a budget build up like many others. I only use this jeep for mud bogging and cruising around my 80 acres. It is not street driven.

I will try swapping the ends on the box. Sounds like a good Idea.

Anybody have any comments on making a slip shaft of some sort?

One of our members here has taken an XJ steering shaft and lengthened it a bit to fit in his CJ. The XJ shafts have good quality ujoints at each end, unlike the bell coupler/crappy ujoint on CJs.
I'm not sure on the spline count for each end, you'll have to check that... and you'll need to be able to produce a sound weld...
but it is a low-buck approach that has worked well for one or more members here.
    Welcome aboard!! :)
