I went out to start the Jeep the other day after several weeks and it would not start. Preliminary troubleshooting points to a bad fuel pump. I have had alot of rust and whatnot getting into the fuel filter from the tank so I am concluding that this aided the demise of the pump. I have no proof of that though. I was think and wanted to know of any downside to just simply adding a second fuel filter inline right before the fuel pump. Has anyone done this? Any issues? I figure if this debris from the tank will be an issue at least this first filter will catch it before it hits the pump. BTW this is a 74 with a 258.

There should be a stainer on the pickup tube in the tank that should keep the big chunks out of the pump.

but they too can fall apart in pieces
or a PO even remove it
I'd install the 2nd filter without hesitation or worry

AC used to sell a glass bowl filter that worked really well. Mounted on the firewall, it would remove water and sediment by gravity before the gas went through the filter. The plastic inline filters are supposed to do the same, but their capacity for said sediment and water is small. Marine filters look similar, but are beaucoup expensive. If you come across an old, heavy truck (gasoline fueled) at the wrecking yard, it might serve as a donor for a bowl-style filter.

Yes, after discovering many pinhole leaks and much rust in my tank, I sealed the tank and installed a pre fuelpump filter. Mine went inside the drivers side frame rail, but just before the pump is fine too. I used the glass type, but installed it with a rubber strap to protect it from vibration and such. I can see if its clogged or if theres no gas flow. I used easy release hoseclamps (from import cars) and a wing nut to easily remove filter to unclogg if needed. So far, so good.
