Well, guys, my factory service manual has pretty diagrams but they don't really have anything on this one (crucial) switch. Apparently, I got an extra page on cherokees instead.

I've got a diagram of the back of the switch, including labelling. None of it is as obvious as I'd like, so I am hoping some of you can look at it and tell me what goes where. I numbered each of the 10 tabs and included the labels from the back as close to their original position as possible.

The only thing that makes sense to me is where the main line feeds in fromt he battery. For the ignition, I have no idea what grounds (if anything), what goes to the coil, and which ones aren't even used. Accessory, I have even less of a clue unless. Also, where it says GRD, is it referring to the little unused socket or is it referring to the top two tabs on the accesory side?

I'll post on a couple of other boards in case you guys don't have anything on it.

There's a '72 manual at www.c104.net ... the wiring is different on the '72 since it doesn't use a fuse box. The ignition switch is probably the same except for the knob.

NB the website says "Commando Manual" but it's the manual that covers all '72 Jeep products.

This manual is insane. If I had this when I started the project, I would have just bought a fuse panel and a couple of spools of each color wire so I'd have different gauges.

Sorry it doesn't help. I thought maybe it would have a picture of the back of the switch, but it doesn't (at least in my quick search for it). It sorta-kinda has a picture of the wires and plug in the wiring diagrams, but it's not clear enough to be of much use.

Looking more closely at your switch picture, I would guess that there are only 5 connections: battery, ignition, starter, accessory and ground. The re are two groups of 4 tabs for ignition (key on, running) and accessory. The battery tab is hot all the time - the source of power for the switch. The starter tab (s1) goes to the starter solenoid - obvious purpose. There's no real need for a ground to the switch, so I'd suppose that the ground would go to the case (the unused socket) in some applications where it might be useful to have the case grounded (?). In this application, there's no real need for a ground, so I wouldn't worry about it.

If you have a DVM, you can test the switch easily. Turn the key to accessory, you should have zero resistance between bat and acc (all 4 tabs). Similarly, to run, zero ohms between bat and ign. Switch to start, zero ohms to ign and S1.

    hth!

stop... when I said the manual was insane and I would have done it by hand instead of getting the new harness, I meant it was so clear and perfect, I wouldn't have needed a harness to do the job. It is awesomely insane!

It is insane that such a clear and detailed diagram was sitting on the Internet on a Commando page when the factory manual blows donkeys. :)
