Ok, so I just bought a 73 cj5. Its great, I love it. The person that I bought it from didn't seem to jack about it: axles, engine, lift and so one. So my question is, does anybody know what the stock axles were for that year and/or if there not stock how can i tell what axles I have.

Dana 30 front axle, Dana 44 rear (30-spline, flanged, one-piece axles)
Common diff ratios are 3.73, optional was 4.27

Dana 20 transfer case, tranny if 3-speed is probably a T14 if you have a 6 cylinder, T15 if you have a V8.

    Got pics?? :)

There's a '72 factory manual online at www.c104.net ... lots of good information there. The site says that it's a Commando manual, but there's only one Jeep manual for '72, so all models are covered. The differences between a '72 and '73 are minor and few - knobs on the dash, heater controls, vapor recovery are all I can think of off the top of my head. <edit> Also clutch linkage and float dampening spring on the 304.

The axles each had a tag from the factory, under one of the cover bolts, that gave the gear ratio. If the tag is missing (common) you can either take the cover off and look at the tooth ratio stamped in the ring gear, or count the turns of the driveshaft for one turn of the wheels.

    We like pics here...

    Welcome from Boston!

My dad has a '73 that I need to get pics of for the before and after section. That was one of the worst ones we have bought and now it is one of the best. Welcome from TN.
