Fixed: V6 Cutting out at cruising speeds?

    So now we have the HEI distributor with the custom advance, clean fuel filters and a re-mounted carb? I think I'd try a new set of plugs, plug wires and a maybe a cap/rotor, depending on vintage.

    If it's still a points distributor, I'd pop in a condensor.

    Rebuilt carb? Check
    Cleaned up fuel filters? Check
    New Cap? Check
    New Rotor? Less than 4 months old, Check
    New Coil? Less than 4 months old, Check
    New Plug Wires? Less than 4 months old, Check
    New Plugs? Less than one month old, Check

    All that stuff has been replaced since I got the Jeep. The two things that coincide are putting in an OF distributor, points or HEI and new plugs. I can understand one plug being bad but all 6? This is happening on both sides of the engine. Maybe you guys know something I don't regarding plugs, can a whole "batch" be bad?

    I don't think a whole batch could be bad, but a bad coil wire would effect all of them.

    Coil wire? On an HEI? Or the power wire to the coil? I checked it, it's getting a full 12V.

    I don't see how it's related to the ignition. It's not related to RPM isn't the problem. The speed is. At almost exactly 55 mph it starts popping and cutting out which is at an RPM well below where I'm able to drive it in 1st or 2nd gear. Seems like if it were a weak ignition somewhere it'd cut out at the same RPM regardless of speed? Maybe not?

    Long shot here, but could there be a hot wire grounding out? It would be a huge cowinkydink, but mebbe a wire is "blowing back" in the breeze and shorting?

    How about grounds?

    Wait a second.....Didja try driving with the gas cap loose/off? Mebbe it's sucking the gas down faster than the air in the tank can equalize? And are you sure that the steel lines are clear? If it's been sitting, some junk may have congealed in there....

    Just some silly things to look for....Good luck!

    At the risk of asking the obvious, have you checked the tank for crud at the pickup?

    At this point I'm willing to try anything. :rofl:

    I doubt gas has congealed anywhere, it's pretty fresh. Tank was new last fall too before someone suggests that. :D

    No I haven't. Dropping the tank is a pain, it's full, it's a new poly tank last fall so that's not obvious to me. :(

    every gear at a specific RPM exurts a different amount of load on the engine. Is it possible that @ 55 you are running too rich? Too much fuel (due to haveing alot of load and compensating with pedal) would cause a bad/ineeficient mixture and cause a misfire.

    Just a thought.:?

    Carb's been rebuilt now and now the adjustment screws have been changed at least 4x during this whole process. Backfires through the carb if anything, not out the tailpipes like I'd expect if it were rich (which a couple weeks ago it was and it was doing).

    Lean it out more?

    not nessecarily a back fire, an all out misfire. Too much fuel won't ignight at all (cut out or as my race driver used to say "burbles @ #### RPM". Backfire is a timeing issue. might consider a smaller jet if possible (have not worked on this vintage jeep and threw the 79's carb in the trash) but if you can go 1 or 2 sizes down to see what happens it may just eliminate yet anouther possibility

    Sparky, you don't necessarily need to drop the tank to check the pickup. Undo the hose at the fuel pump, and give a blast of air in there. The air pressure should move any loose crud that's residing there. This may also give you some idea of the condition of the fuel line. You didn't say how old those were, and if they're the stock ones, then that may be your trouble....

    If it backfires through the carb, are you sure you have not jumped timing somewhere? Weren't you adjusting your distributor recently?

    Adam is out in the field today. He was adjusting the distributor recently. He has a new "odd fire" with new vacuum advance on it. I know he has been outside with the timing light a lot lately. I don't know what "jumping timing" is but he might.

    I'm just blowing this out my backside right now, but is it possible to put an even fire crank in the 225??? You keep saying it ran before with an even fire hei. Maaaayyyybbeee, someone did some work down the line that you don't know about?

    I know thats a long shot, but seems wierd it ran fine before with the even fire.

    Another off the wall thing, is it new vacuum line? I had a truck that as soon as it hit high gear and was under load it would cut out and not run. Turned out the vacuum line was dry rotted. Seemed to much worse when warm and usually only in high gear.
