    Greetings all:
I recently purchaced a 78 CJ5 with a fairly new fiberglass tub. It looked like someone had done a recent partial restore. I had to put in a transmission and engine (304 and T176) and was finally able to run it last week. The Jeep runs and shifts fine, however whenever I do anything that is not on a flat road like going down a ditch, the clutch Bell crank pops off the bracket that attaches to the transmission. The clip stays in the end of the bell crank shaft, the ball pulls out. I tried to compare the distance between the bellcrank mounts with my 75, but it looks like they are different legnths. I'm not sure if whoever put the tub on put the mount in the right location. Does anyone know what the distance between the mounts should be? The bell crank is 9" long, but I don't know how much to allow for flex. After really looking at this setup (Clutch bell crank) it looks kinda weak by design, Anyone else have any problems with these parts? Or have any suggestions?
Love reading through the old forums, BTW.

    here's a parts book pic
the bushing should snap onto and over the ball stud
the clip should hold the bushing in the tube

Here is a pic from a 77 that TIMGR posted for me last month. The 75 and 78 will be way different.

Aaaahhhhhhh...I've got that drawing in my manual, but you mentioning the bushing got me to scratching my head. I don't think the PO put the bushing in there. At least I don't remember seeing it. I'll take it apart this weekend and look. I thought the setup looked cheezy.
Is that the key to keeping the thing in one working piece?
BTW, is the bushing metal or plastic? Also does the bushing have a slot for the clip to fit into?
    TIA.

The bushing is plastic. I don't know about the clip on your model, but I do know that filling it up with grease is what kept the bearings in place on mine. Weird. I looked at the guy at NAPA reaaaaaal funny when he said that, but he was right.

all the clip does is keep the bushing in the tube ( in theory)
they have to move/float in the tube due to body/frame flex
and keep it greased up as mentioned above
