Swapped in 75 CJ 304 into my 75 CJ-6 that had a 258. I also swapped the engine wiring harness as it was configed for the V8. The alt is dead an I want to go to a Delco unit like what was used in the 6 CYL version AND all my other Jeeps. The difference in the two harnesses is the 6 version uses a transmission spark switch and the ign box is the "gold box" (ign mod?). The V8 version has a smaller black box (voltage reg?)and a gray wire that goes to a post on the motorola alt. It doesn't have the ign mod as the diagram shows in my 75 service manual....could that be because its a points style dist.
Just to see, I hooked up the 6 cyl harness (without the alt ) and it did seem to run fine.
I want the proper layout of the 8 cyl harness and want to merge the two....maining the last 1/3 of the 6 cyl harness so I can use the delco alt and the ign mod with it.....
Anyone do this before? any thing I'm not seeing or doing wrong?
    Thanks

I was just in a similar situation, except the Jeep came with the 304 and I installed a new wiring harness (aftermarket).

I had tons and tons and tons of trouble. I started by trying to wire up the Motorola style, then I said "fudge this!" and switched to a D.U.I. distributor (even though a regular H.E.I. would have done the same thing for simplifying the coil/distributor side of the alternator and ignition wiring). Next, gave up on the Motorola, and went to a Delco. I could never get it charging, so I finally ended up with a "one wire" deal, which, in the case of this specific alternator, is a Delco with an internal, self exciting regulator. Now I have a one wire distributor and a one wire alternator and it is running like a top. The DUI was 370 and the Alternator was 69 after the core. Pricey but it works flawlessly and no more headaches.
