    Hello, I recently purchased a 73 CJ5, 232 Straight 6.
As part of getting it running again (replaced entire fuel system, rebuilt the carb, plugs/wires, etc) I changed the oil and filter.

The engine now runs smooth except for the fountain of oil shooting out from the oil filter gasket!
    I used a Fram PH25 filter (I've read that I should try the PH11).

I 've tried another new PH25 to the same result.
I did notice that for a few seconds before the oil filter gasket blew, the oil pressure spiked (pegged) and then went back to 20 when the gasket blew.

Has anyone heard of this happening? I'm thinking it might just be the wrong filter, but I'm afraid it might be something else.
    Thanks

I have no idea........but sounds like something is clogged causing back pressure to the filter and the filter gasket is acting like a fuse.

Stuck oil pressure relief valve? I'd have to check my manual, but I expect it's in the oil pump, inside the oil pan. Did you look at the oil pressure gauge while this was happening?

I looked on the Fram site and it says PH11 unless space is restricted - who gave you the PH25 number? I'd suggest you go to your local NAPA store and get one of their filters. They are Wix brand and are said to be less restrictive and better quality than the Fram product.

:iagree: had this happen to an engine a while back when the rebuilder did not clean the freshly bored block thoroghly and metal shavings made it to the relief valve. it would blow a filter up like a cantelope:shock:

Yep. You definetely have a restriction in the system. The filter gasket is the weak link and acting like a pressure relief valve..

    Great, thanks for the suggestions.
I did pick up a PH11 and a NAPA oil filter to try this weekend.
Glad to have the backup from you guys, I'll check out the oil pump, are you all referring to the "bypass" in the filter or a true relief valve in the engine?

:iagree: Especially if it is blowing the gasket, rather than it being the wrong filter.

The psi relief on a v8 is right by the oil filter. Had the same thing happen to me. Found that I hit a rock and put a dent in the relief housing and it stopped the relief from moving. The relief on a 6 is in the oil pump.

I have continued to confirm you all's diagnosis.
Now that you all pointed me in the right direction I have been able to do some more research.
    Fram had a good description.

Planning on cleaning the valve tomorrow. Will let you all know.

I've heard of that happening before when someone replaced an oil filter but didn't remove the old gasket. I think after a filter is tightened on an engine then removed, the gasket sometimes stays there, then when a new filter is installed the two gaskets don't seal together.

    I'd try that first.

So I pulled the oil pump today.
So far so good, I'm right on track with the TIMGR's stuck pressure relief valve diagnosis. The release valve is completely frozen in place. (Its a spring loaded plunger type of a valve, too much pressure and it forces the valve back and open to release excess pressure) I tried to free it to no avail, so I just ordered a new oil pump today, should have it here in a couple of days. I'll continue to update the thread with my progress.

    Success!!
I installed a new pump w/ new pick up tube.
I also used a new oil filter from NAPA, no more FRAM for me.
Thanks guys, it was the pressure relief valve.
