Front hub trouble

    Hi folks

    Wonder if you can help, one of my front wheel hubs has started to loose oil on the visable front side of the wheel, it sprays out in a star like pattern onto the rim. I think a seal has gone, any ideas on who would be the best suppiler for a replacement? Also I guess if I do lots of miles it could get worse?:(

    Like Mark says. The hub bolts can get loose and then bearing grease escapes. Especially with freewheeling ("locking") hubs, etc. - they can require a thin-wall socket to torque them right, and lock tabs to hold them snug. Often neglected by previous owners.

    If this is the case, it's just a paper gasket you need, and you can make it from gasket stock. Or use sealant from a tube.

    This may sound dum, but any tips on putting her into four wheel drive would be great, reason is I have done it, i have only used her on th eroad so far, and worse the plates are in German and French so I am not sure which lever does what.:?

    Chris, the pattern for your shifters is probably this one, if you have twin sticks:

    Usually you can shift between 2 high and 4 high while moving (not at high speed, but rolling). To shift into 4-low you need to be stopped. Sometimes the shifters will not want to shift in or out of gear. In these cases it sometimes helps to drive forward or backward a few feet to take the "bind" off of the drivetrain so it will shift more easily.

    Thanks to all, I found both sides were loose, so I've tightened them both, off out this weekend to the Wessex Military gathering, so i will see if that's done it. Thanks Lynn for the pic of the gear change, much better than German!:beer: :)
