Thanks for those sites, I haven't stumbled across them yet... I was looking more in a direction of trying to find out if there is such a way to find the history of the specific vehicle, where it has been, what units used it and what it's job was back in the 50's. I know its a long stretch but ya never know whats out there until you ask. But thanks for your input I always like checking out new web sites...

Oh there's lots of ways besides paint.

On the M38, look for the headlight guards, the hinged grill, the oversized gas cap, the four reflectors on the rear corners, recessed tailights, the shovel and axe brackets below the passenger doorway, the functional battery box on the cowl, and 24 volt electrical components. The dash is also a lot different from a CJ3A.

I think the question had to deal more with the history of the jeep, where it was located, what units used it. You can sand down the front bumper and the rear and see if unit markings are visiable but you are not going to be able to find out any other infromation on it.

Bill you hit the nail on the head with what i was lookin for. Unfortunately the original paint was sanded down and painted pink( yeah some jackA$$ painted it pink) and now I dont have the luxury to see any of that. btw... I have restored it's dignity and gave it fresh coats of olive drab paint.

Go to willysmjeeps.com they have a data base of hood numbers and might be able to get you close to yours. My m38 is 2-52 dod and has the hood number USAF N-1346 and is blue instead of green
