    Hello all,

I am working towards upgrading my current brake setup to YJ brakes on a CJ. (Linked below.)
    http://www.bustedjeep.com/projects/yjbrakes.asp

I have all the parts to complete this (I hope). What I am stuck on is that I need a vacuum source for the booster. I am not familiar with brake boosters and where the vacuum source is supposed to be, or how the booster even connects to the vacuum source.

The guide mentions an EGR valve. Either mine does not look like theirs, or I don't have one. I will include some pictures of the old master cylinder setup and of the engine bay. Its certainly not as straight forward as the linked page suggests. Please comment on the pictures and as to what I should be looking to do here.

    Thanks,

    -Tim

your vac source shouldn't be a problem at all.
Being a 72, you don't have an EGR valve.
The large fitting on the end of the intake manifold can work; maybe remove that one and see if you can find a replacement dual outlet, one that has 2 nipples for 2 hoses. Your local parts house can help on this.
If you don't want to go that way, there should be at least one pipe plug at the rear of your intake manifold plugging a vac port that's not being used; simply remove the pipe plug and plumb your vac source with a fitting there.
I would resist the temptation to splice and/or tee into the large PCV vac hose that currently is being used in your photo; the brake booster really should have it's own dedicated vac source in my opinion; plus you don't want oil residue reaching the booster diaphram.

Hey Jim, thanks for the very helpful reply! It's time to have another look under the hood to see about some of the stuff you mentioned... I'll be back shortly to post what will work the best. :)

In the last photo, the one at the bottom of my post; is the pipe plug you are referring to the square plug on top of the intake manifold in the right side (toward the rear of the Jeep)? I couldn't seem to see any other plugs besides that.

For clarification, the large fitting on the end of the intake manifold has the large PCV vac hose connected to it and runs up and to the right. If I am mistaken in what I interpreted from your reply, let me know.

What difference is there between getting a dual replacement outlet or splicing into the vac hose?

Tim on my YJ the brake booster vacum comes from right under the throttle body. If you can use the one right below the carb and find another vacum source for the PCV it should work fine.
But like Jim said the brakes need to have a source of thier own.
