Does anyone have a method for replacing the ring gear on a CJ3A flywheel. Does anyone know if the 124 tooth ring gear can replace the 129 tooth on the same flywheel?

    Thanks

    Mike

heat the ring gear in an oven so it expands, then slip over the flywheel. i would recommend having flywheel resurfaced while you've got it out

To remove the old one, just work your way around with a drift punch until it comes off. Then heat with a torch, propane works good. I usually use a pair of vise grips to hold it with. Then just drop it on the flywheel.
As far as the different tooth count I am not sure. I know the old fords used different ring gears on the same flywheel.

Punch to knock old one off

I tossed the flywheel in the freezer for a couple hours, then heated the ring gear in the oven to 300* (do not preheat, just toss it in and turn it on.)

Grab with oven mits --ring gear will literally just fall on the flywheel, no rushing --allow temps to equalize. I would use the same tooth count.

I think this is best for even heating and cooling

one side of the ring gear should have a slight bevel to it on the inside. Thats the side that goes on the flywheel first.

Not to hijack or anything, but what if I am cooking a frozed pizza while I am heating my ring gear. Is it bad to preheat in that case?:) :)

Wait til after you install the ring gear, then cook pizza on top of flywheel. Results are much better than a pizza stone and you're oven is already at cooking temp.

To answer this question, no they dont interchange, different starters. I ran into this when I tried replacing my starter, and quickly realized the replacement was for the other flywheel.... I'm not sure which flywheel I have I just know my starter had 10 teeth and the replacement had 9

Thanks for all the replies. I am wanting to replace the 129 tooth flywheel that is for use with the electric key starter to the 124 tooth style with the manual foot pedal 9 tooth starter.

This is just a guess, but I am pretty sure that you could put the 124 tooth ring gear your flywheel. Judging by how many things Jeep left the same for so long, I think this would be a pretty good guess. Also knowing that some of the other manufacturers did the same kind of thing by putting different ring gears on the same flywheel. Just my .02.

Does the 9 tooth starter go with the 124 tooth flywheel and the 10 tooth go with the 129 tooth? Is it the other way around. The reason I ask is that the L head in the jeep now has the 129 tooth ring gear and the starter has the 9 tooth key electric starter.

    Thanks

    Mike
