Does anyone know how far forward from the tailgate the rear seat of a CJ6 is mounted? There are no visable holes in the floor of my Jeep to give me a clue and I would like to mount a seat where it would have been originally. (Looking at the pictures in Boyink's CJ6 site it looks like some are close to the tailgate and some are closer to the front seats.)

IIRC Tim Reese has said that the seats were either in the CJ5 location (close to the front seats), or all the way against the tailgate.

IMHO this is a decision that very few people are going to recognize as being "correct" or not, so placed mine kind of in the middle -- where it would gives the rear seat passengers more legroom than a five, but still leaves more storage room behind the seat than a five.

The stock position in the intermediate CJ-6s uses the same brackets as with the CJ-5. I presume this was done in the same way before 1972. This put the seat 20" further back from the front seat, compared to the CJ-5. The factory floors have threaded holes for the seat hold-down brackets.

You could put the back foot of the seat bracket under the front floor bracket, and that would place the seat almost as close to the front seats as in a CJ-5. It would also leave a gap behind the back seat for storage. That's how I positioned mine. The factory position is all the way back though.

Thanks, I think kind of in the middle is a good choice. Has anyone ever actually seen the longitudinal rear seats that are in the optional equipment brochure listed elsewhere in this forum http://www.earlycj5.com/tech/accessories/index.shtml ? I wonder if they are M38 rear seats that Jeep had left over and sold as optional equipment.

You could put two seats in there like this CJ8...make the rear one removable.

There isn't enough room is a 6 for two seats like that. You only have 20 extra inches, and a seat is wider than that.

I figured the 6 was at least as long as the 8. Oh well...

The 8 has more rear overhang.

Ah, I see, so the 6 and 8 have about the same wheelbase but the 8 has a longer overhang past the rear wheels. Giving it more of a truck look.

My '68 had the seat brackets set in the floor so the seat was against the tailgate.

Thanks for the info. That is a good looking 8 (I could haul the whole neighborhood to get ice cream in that).
