How to remove a leaf spring (or 2)?

Thanks for the advice on my A1. I think I've decided to make it into my wheeling/hunting rig. I just don't think it will hold value on the military market with all the mods that have been done over time. I'll take my time and do some wise mods that make it reliable and comfortable.

That leads to my question- how to remove a couple of leaf springs? It looks like a pretty straight forward job but as we all know there will be something that makes it difficult. Any advice?

Thanks again and I'll try to get a pic uploaded soon.

The bushings have a metal outer sleeve you need to remove with a hacksaw or chisel before installing new poly bushings.

Other than that I can't think of any gotchas.

If your gonna remove just a leaf or two from your existing spring packs, you'll need new axle U bolts and the spring holder thingys(holds the springs together and keeps them from fanning out like a deck of cards) Most spring rebuilder companies in your area will have them.

If you are after a softer ride remove the shortest leaves.

You'll need a new spring center bolt for each pack too.

Before you are through you may wish you had just replaced springs. If I could afford it that is what I'd do.

Are you looking for the flex factor? Or the ride.

The military shackles/bushings are probably the telescoping "screw" type. I think some may be left-hand threaded, if I recall.

But you may be able to remove spring leaves without removing the main leaf(s) from the vehicle.

I would remove 2 or 3 alternating leaves; lower ones, but not all from the very bottom. I just feel like it would maintain better distribution of stresses.

OK, the springs on my '56 appear to be fine and usable, so I'm just going to clean 'em up, paint 'em and use them. I can always replace 'em later.

How many leaves should a stock '56 CJ5 with no extra weight start out with? It's currently set up with five leaves in the fronts and nine in the rears. Want it to be comfortable for street driving, but not too soft for light trails.

Rondog, it's hard to say exactly.

My stock '57 CJ5 has 12 leaves front, 13 leaves rear!

My book shows options for 5,6, or 7 front leaves, and 9,11,12, or 13 rear, and apparently that is not a complete listing. But it seems like you have something near the minimum number already.

Obviously Jeeps were never intended for comfort, and such a short wheelbase will never ride real smooth.

But hey, we signed on to be tough, right?
