I broke it

    Fairly nasty trail today. It makes steering difficult when the leaf spring center pin is broke resulting in the axle sliding back & forth on spring.
    When the front drive shaft fell out, I knew something was wrong. I ended up with the winch cable wrapped around the axle then hooked to frame to kinda keep axle in middle. It worked, I made it home.

    So now what? Replace the pin w/ a grade 8?

    Very ingenious trail fix! Glad you made it back OK.

    My '56 springs are 50 years old, but appear to still be in good shape (at least they still have good curve, not flat), so I'm just going to disassemble, sandblast and paint them for now. Already have new center pins, nuts and bushings ready to go. Gonna do one front and one rear at a time so I can have the others as a reassembly guide.

    I figure I can buy new springs later on, should be a quick and easy replacement since my old ones will already have been removed and cleaned up. Won't have the BS of rusted parts to deal with.

    Hm - wonder if you have been on some of the same trials I have. N end of Taylor Park - busted D side center pin while up there early June.

    I used some ratchet straps to hold mine in place :)

    Make sure your u-bolts are tight. Thats generally how center pins break.

    Glad to hear you made it ok. What trail was it?
