Why can I open the vacume line to the distributor without effecting the idle speed? If I open an unused line on the intake the idle will increase.
    This is a 304.

The throttle butterfly closes off the carburetor vacuum tap (ported vacuum) at idle.

Thanks. The reason I'm checking is I have a big dead spot in the throttle just off idle. Once the rpm's come up it pulls very well.

Can you borrow a vacuum gauge from someone? If it will hold vacuum it’s good.

The usual problem with 2100s is the power valve. You can replace it without rebuilding the carb, but the carb has to come off the manifold. Don't be shocked if your rebuild kit is $50+ ... the 2-stage power valve adds about $25 to the price of the kit.
