It's been a long time since my electrical class, but I figure that the 1.5 ohm BR X12 VDC = 18.0 amps. I'm thinking that there is some added resistance in the circuit that needs to be eliminated. If you're blasting through 30 amp fuses, you are double in amps from what you should be. I suggest that you start with all power off, and read resistance in that circuit. Then eliminate components in that circuit until you read minimum ohms resistance. I've had wire go bad from the inside, causing much the same problem. You could run a new wire from the fuse to the BR and then from the BR to the coil. I hope this helps, and I hope the wife is doing fine.

I think that you might be thinking of the formula for power, P=IE. In this case, to get amps you need to take volts and divide by resistance, or 12.2vdc/3.7ohm series load (2.0 + 1.7) = 3.29 amps. This would not include any additional amperage from resistance in terminals, switches, spark plug, distributor, etc.

An easy way to eliminate your BR/Coil as a problem is to do an ohm check between the switch side of the BR and the dist side of the coil. (Make sure your ign switch is off!) Should read just a few ohms. If it is <1ohm, you've got a short. If it is >5ohms you've got a bad component. If it is infinity, you've got a broken wire (although you probably wouldn't be popping fuses if this was the case).

    Lynn,

That sucks, sorry to hear about your trip to the store. I had my fingers crossed for you but I guess it didn't help!

I have found that overthinking a problem usually doesn't help. You just had everything apart trying to figure out your other problem so take it apart again and put it back together slowly.

You will find something wasn't connected right in the process.

It turned out to be a soldered splice in the wire from the BR to the coil. It had no heat-shrink wrap on it, just two wraps of black tape... and they were loose. It was hitting at just the edge of the metal-bodied horn, and appeared to be shorting out, as some of the strands were toasted.
Can't blame a PO... have no idea what I was thinking when I did this splice

I fixed that, fine tuned the carb... and really haven't had time to give it any road test... I got involved in my icebox refinishing project... ;)
I'll get back to the Jeep later.

    How old is your coil?
Once it stalls/coil is hot, is it not restarting until it cools down?
May just need a new coil...

Ice fishing that sounds like fun:D It looks pretty old, rusty, like its OEM.

Did they just put balist resitors in the dauntless and not in the f-head? Mine has none.

No ballast resistor on the F-head.

Mine had one. But I got a FlameThrower coil and didn't need it anymore.

Maybe someone added it? Manual doesn't even show one.

Not sure. But there was one on it when I bought it. It run w/one. Till I
replaced the coil. I even replaced the register w/one I got from NAPA. I
believe it was in their book. :? :?
