I have searched through your fab ideas and you guys have some great ones. I am looking to build a swinging tire rack for my '66 CJ5 for at least one, preferably two Jerry cans and one 33" spare tire. If I could, I would also have one capable of carrying a cooler, a hi-lift jack, a shovel, and an axe.

I see two methods of connection. One on the body with a backing plate for a little more support. It might be possible to attach the backing plate to the body mount too. I see this one as offering the best lateral support but not being able to support as much weight.

The next one is going off the cross member. I have seen some connections which look very good, however I think if there is more than a spare tire on the rack it might start to flex outward too much, not enough lateral support.

What about using the cross member as the main support and running a support bracket to the body? I know Jeeps had Jerry cans and spare tires mounted on the body (with backing plates of course) so this can be done. To me, this would be the most stable and strongest method of attachment.

What have you guys done? I need some help.

I've always wondered if somehow attaching to the rollcage at the would be a good idea -- with some careful planning you could sneak a 1" tube or something right through the rear softtop window zippers and tie into the bottom of the rollcage - something removeable maybe, with some kind of "give" using urethane bushings?

Coming off the roll cage works pretty good.

He told me that to do another one he would charge $750. That is not what I paid.

I have seen the Quaggy article and a few others with just the tire carrier. Those are high quality items.
