Okay I have saved all of willysworkers pics and I like that plan. Are these tanks pretty easy to come by? Does anybody that has done the rear gas tank swap have any pros and cons?

    Hi,

I did a swap too. Back in 1985 I put a '78 & up tank in the rear section of my 1965 cj5 similar to how Boyink did. However, I left the frame brace in tact. I opted to mount the tank in the same place but just hang it under the bracing. It still gave plenty of clearance for the wheeling I do especially with the suspension and tire set up I have. Departure angle was fine too. I fabbed a custom skid plate from 3/16”. The only draw back I had for my set up was it looked like I had a 20 gal (vs. the stock 15 gal) because it did hang about 2.5 or 3 inches lower.

I’m in the process of another ground up. I was considering changing my tank configuration. One option I’m considering is channeling a “new” tank (I don’t like the idea of grinding and welding on a tank that once had gas in it – so I’d go with a new one). Then it could sit up higher in the frame, while keeping the rear frame bracing in tact. Not sure if anyone has ever done this… I know there are all sorts of things that would need to be considered. This mod would create chambers at the top of the tank and I’d have to solve for venting between these chambers. (but I’m getting ideas from my Harley Fat Bob tanks for that issue)… and I’m sure there’s others.

I may just stick with my set up that has worked for 20 years for me. But then again after 20+ years of wrenchin’ on the toy – you tend to create things to build/change/mod/etc.
