2 BRL or 4 BRL?

So you guys gave me the advice to keep the 225 for the Jeep instead of swapping in a 350. I was talking to the guy doing the Machine work on my 225 and expressed to him that I want to add an Edelbrock or Offenhauser intake with a 4 BRL Carb. He said it was a bad idea because that would put my power up to just about what the 350 was going to have and that since I am keeping the V-6 to keep the Jeep sane it would be a bad swap. Is he right or should he keep to machining motors? Inputs and advice would be great. Thanks.

Easy now, no need to flame anyone here.

Personally, I'd vote for keeping the stock Rochester 2G because it behaves better off-road. Everyone that I've ever heard of has had to fiddle and mod their 390 Holley to get it to not flood out whenever you get it on a decent slope. A 225 only needs a MAX of 300 CFM at 4500 RPMs anyway.

Apparently someone said something ignorant to you, or maybe about your mechanic, and it was deleted. This is a great place, they stay on top of that nonsense.

ya know i have been asking myself this same question about what i am gonna do with the 2g...i had a 390 holly on my 70 and loved it, but that was after several rebuilds, different needles, and alot of tuning....eventually i hooked up with a holly rep that "gave" me a set of needles, springs, and floats off of there small truck avenger carb....after a ton of work i basically had a 390 truck avenger (this was after a ton of tuning and tinkering) the carb was awsome, we tried to flood it out, but couldnt...however, it looks like my plans are to stcik with the 2g just cause i have heard so much about how good it really is offroad....to me all that work was just not worth it...but to answer your question about power, no i do not think it created a power monster at all....as a matter of fact i think adding the hei dist did a ton more to help out in the power field than adding the carb...just my .02

the 4bbl advantage only applies at WOT (wide open throttle)
how much of that are you planning on ?
can you tell I like the stock 2bbl ?

I don't have much expierence with the jeep world but I DO KNOW 4bbl carbs are better suited for toasting guys off the line and at highway speeds, my little stock F head dragged my 89 Caravan in park with the em brake on and I couldn't even tell It was back there. (my sone was slow to release the brake and put it in nuetral) The Jeep was on my loose stone driveway and the Caravan was on dry packed dirt, almost like asphalt. Needless to say I was impressed.
Btw my F head has a whopping 70 some HP

Have to express a dissenting opinion… I ran a 2G for 20 plus years – good carb. In the last 2 years I have gone to a Holly – started with a 390, tried an Edelbrock 500, settled on the TA 470. Ya, there was some fiddling to do at first, but that is also one of the things I wanted to do - experiment. The 470 only required a float adjustment, and I had to do that with the 2G as well when I first started with it. I have actually gotten better mileage with the 4bbl as the primaries are smaller, but I get the kick with the secondary if needed.

Overall – I believe the Holly TA 470 is superior to the 2G on the 225. Now I will also say, that is for what I do with it – wheeling in the Mts of CO – tooling around town for fun.

What about throttle body conversions? I read a posting talking about the Holley projection kit. Really how easy is this? I am a mechanical Moron! Would like the advantages if it is feasable but I can barely set up a Carb with Points correctly.

I too have had good luck with fours. While the 2g will cover most anything, sometimes you need to get those tires spinning to clear the cleats. I think I've run everything in the book. My preferences in order...Q jet, 450 economaster(no longer available), AFB,followed by an adapted 2100. If you do go this route, be sure the intake is the low RPM unit.

    good point, you're correct
the brief time I had a 390 on mine, I did get better mpgs on the highway

Like stated, for most driving wheeling the 2G will do fine. I've seen them stay running even with the Jeep on its side. ;)
If you do full throttle attacks on stuff the 4bbl may be a better choice.

the only time I had with my 2G flooding over was before I installed the fuel line regulator.

personally, i hate an edelbrock. but i guess i never had a new one.i have a 350 in my jeep and had a heck of a time on hills with it flodding. that is until i installed a 2 barrel now it will idle all day heading straight up, but thats just my 2cents.

The throttle body injection will probably only give you performance similar to the 2bbl. I would only recommend it if you are really into off-roading because of it's ability to run at severe angles. TBI units are relatively simple after you have a good understanding of carbureted engines. Actually they are simpler in some ways. As far as installation goes, if you bought a kit, you just follow the instructions. Hardest part would be deciding on a fuel pump and location. Plus the return line to the tank. Again, don't expect a big boost in power.

I was thinking about off road and freeway. The motor was not running so I tore it down and started the re-build and have no clue as to its condition.

Would the 2bbl Holly be to much?

Why bother? You have a stock 2 bbl that's more than adequate and great off-road IMO. FI would be the only thing I'd consider for easier starting and a little better running Jeep.
