Has anyone had any issues with the proportioning valve in the rear of a commando. I'm going through my brake system and from my understanding this unit should be free flow and only come into play when there is an emergency type stop to prevent rear whell lock up. However my unit seems to be plugged.

Has anyone done away with this unit with good results or is it a required componenet for saftey. I do not plan to drive this vehicle on the street only a trail rig. Any thoughts or advie will be appreciated.

I'm a little lost to what it is your referring too. Got pictures? Jeepster never had a factory installed proportioning valve, anywhere.

This valve is (was) mounted on the cross member above the rear axle. (see Pics)

Not sure what that is but it's not a proportioning valve, at least not like any I've seen. The only time a proportioning valve would be used is if somebody converted to disc on front. Only other thing I can think of is a brake limiting valve but again, never seen one on a Jeepster. Sounds like you already eliminated it, that's a good thing :) .

That is simply the Y-block for the back brakes. They do tend to get plugged up with gunk after a while, but the good news is that any FLAPS has then in stock.

no, that is a proportioning valve assy
it's not just a union or tee
see the hex head plug ?
application vague; not all early Jeeps have one according to the book
for CJ and Jeepster models though
also mentioned in the FSM, page 326 FYI

    My bad.

What purpose does a proportioning valve serve when it is between the two rear wheels?

    the pic looks that way
actually, it is inline on the rear supply line going to the rear wheels
I wonder if this is only used on the dual chamber m/cyls ?

Well I just removed the guts of the valve and put everything back togeter and the brakes now work great. This is after upgrading the MC and installing a booster since I could not get fluid to WC's, now I know. Well at least I got the booster and new MC upgrade. The jeepster stops great. Booster and MC are from an '89 YJ. Thanks guys for your support..
