    Hi everyone.

I recently greased the ports where the clutch and brake pedal are mounted underneath the floor panel. I noticed that the grease just pours out when lubed, there are no rubber cups or seals in place. I was just wondering if anyones jeep have any rubber cups or seals to hold the grease in place? Mine doesnt, can some one shoot me some pics? I can post some.

Also, when greasing the rear axle, how much is too much? Is there a vent to let the excess grease come out? or will it seep out of the oil seals into the brakes?

And finally (for now) theres another grease port where the transfer case levers are located under the floor panel. I tried greasing it and grease just shoots out from the nozle of my grease gun and wont go into the port (even after ive removed it and shot grease through the port to clear any clogs) I tried greasing with everything in neutral and in gear. Being the noob I appreciate any help! :?

To my knowledge, there were never any seals on the clutch/brake pedal shafts.

The rear axle should be filled till it starts to come out of the drain plug. There are axle seals that keep the lube in the axle and not on your brakes.

The grease port on the xfer case is a new one to me. Is it on the case, or on some other point in the linkage?

I think he's talking about the zerk in the end of the little shaft that the two shifters pivot on. And I'd bet the holes in that shaft are rusted up or filled with crud, and just won't let the grease out. On the left in this photo.

The single lever shifter for the t-case is setup different so I don't think there are any grease fittings on the linkage. Someone correct me if I'm wrong about that. :)

As was said, no seals on the pedals. The grease port you're describing I'm pretty sure is the shifter pivot shaft and real common to have old grease/crud plug the holes. Remove the shaft and clean it out and all should be good. These are available new also if yours is worn. Regarding the grease zerks on the rear axle, there are vent ports normally on top of the housing right by the outer end which allows the grease to come out. However, just like the ones on your shifter pivot they get clogged from junk build up which can force the grease past the seal and onto the brakes. Need to unclog those ports first. May require some digging with a small piece of wire as these ports are very small and can be hard to see. Nickmil

    Wow,

Thanks for all the quick responses. All very helpfull! I appreciate it very much! Thanks for the pic, that was the port that was jammed up by the shifters. Greasing is very important, I [try] to do it every oil change ;) thanks again!

How do you all feel about synthetic grease? Does it gunk up like the petrolium based stuff? I hear it performs better, what do you all use?

You're right about the single lever TC. No grease fitting on them (at least not mine, or any others I've seen).

Now I don't mean to hijack, BUT, what about the grease fittings on the rear axle? I've had my jeep a long time, and I've never seen any grease fittings on my axle. Mine is a 71 with flanged D44 rear. Are the grease fittings only a tapered axle thing?

    Thanks,

    Jon

I may be wrong but your axle may be lubricated by the differential when in motion, my tapered axle isnt hence the grease fittings. Correct me if im wrong tho.

Also I cant find any grease fititngs on the front axles. I have a D27 on front. Does anyone know where they are? If any?

Flanged axles didn't have 'em, only tapered axles. Nickmil

No grease fittings on the front except U-joints in the drive shaft and the slip yoke. There are pipe plugs in the knuckles that you fill the knuckles through to lubricate the trunnion bearings and u-joints in the axles. Do a search on "knuckle pudding" here. You'll find lots of cool info there and lots of opinions. Nickmil

How do you feel about synthetic lubes on our old jeeps? Does anyone use them? I looked up knuckle pudding, and it sounds like great stuff. Im gonna steal one of my wife's mixing bowls to make the stuff.

Need pics. My '70 has flanged axles, no grease fitting. Don't see how you could. A flanged axle has a carrier bearing backed w' a seal to hold in the gear oil => no place to lube.:v6:

Can you post pics? Never seen a flanged axle with grease fittings but there's always a first time! Nickmil

I thought it was kinda weird but, yes, they're there. On the rear side of the axle tube about 5" in from the end.

I suppose it's possible that a PO added them?

I'll see if I can get a picture.
